- He was born on November 22, 1942, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
- While in college he received the Phi Delta Kappa leadership award.
- In recognition for his skill as a combat pilot, he received ten air medals.
- On August 30, 1983 aboard the space shuttle Challenger he became the first black astronaut in space.
- In all, he logged 144 missions 65 of those were flown over North Vietnam.
- The launch of the shuttle and its landing were the first to be done at night.
- Guion is now 56 years old.
