To appease any potential cynics about where their money
is going, Urada goes to great lengths in a web section devoted
to accountability where visitors can check on recent donations,
peruse copies of donation receipts and check instant updates
to see how many clicks are going to each organization. He
says similar sites to 4GoodnessSake.org are not as forthcoming
with information claiming that 100% of each donation goes
to nonprofits but in reality the figure is closer to 50%
after administration costs are deducted. "I wish I had a
gripping personal event to describe why I founded 4GoodnessSake.org,
but I really don't. I was involved in service organizations
since grade school, and have seen how much needs to be done.
As I have gotten older, entered graduate school, and started
working, however, I have found it very difficult to keep
up these kinds of activities. I'm also too poor to individually
have much of an impact with personal donations. I think
a lot of people are in this same situation, wanting to help,
but being short on time and money. 4GoodnessSake.org is
my effort to let these people get involved in some small
way once again." Darren Urada is a doctoral candidate in
social psychology at the University of Southern California,
has served as an adjunct faculty member at Mount St. Mary's
College (CA) and Glendale Community College, and runs a
second website, ParticipantsOnline.com, that allows social
research to be conducted over the Internet.
