Grandmother

by Jordan Vereen, age 12

Black mother may not be of me
Sits in her chair and watches me flee
Then away and faster we run
Together off into the sun
You may not be the mother of me
But dear grandmother I thank thee
If it weren't for you I wouldn't be here
Reciting sweet lullabies in your ear
You have given birth to a loving child
Who turned out to be my mom
So dear grandmother listen to me
As you sit under the big apple tree
I say to thee now not then
That you're the best grandmother from deep within
