Devin just played in his room for the rest of the day. He didn't feel like being
with his quarreling parents after such a fun half hour. When he came out of his room
to brush his teeth, his parents were having the biggest fight Devin had ever heard
them have. On the way back to his room he sang the song the little girl had taught
him:
Fall is here, we sing our song
We are happy all day long.
When night comes, we go to sleep
But that happiness we will keep.
He heard his parents stop and listen. The fighting didn't start again but they
didn't say anything. Devin went to bed.
The next morning Devin woke up very early. He sat up in bed and rubbed his eyes.
He saw something on the floor, so he went to see what it was. It was the red leaf.
Devin stood there for a long time, just holding and looking at the leaf. Then,
without making any noise, he tiptoed to his parents' room and placed the leaf on the
shelf above their bed, knowing that the little girl inside the leaf would soften
their hearts like she did his.
