Eventually, Cheetah came along. When he saw Hare, he quickly bit softly at Hare's stomach. In a jiffy, Hare sprang up to his feet, thanked Cheetah, and with one leap, he was digging again. Cheetah was right behind him. But just then, Hare quickly jumped ahead some more and won the race. It was exactly 12:00 when Hare finished.
When Cheetah finished, they went to tell Zair what happened. He announced to all the animals that Hare would become the Zodiac animal. When Lion heard this, he broke into pieces.
Zair's first question to Hare was, "Who would you like to become the Zodiac animal after you die?"
"I want Cheetah to be it after I die," replied Hare.
