Taking the Bully by the Horns

by Kathy Noll with Jay Carter

reviewed by Julie Richer, Cyberkids Founder

Have you ever been bullied? According to the book, Taking the Bully by the Horns, somebody could be bullying you and you don't even know it. If you feel scared, angry, or unhappy, or if you think you're a bad person or not good enough, you may be the victim of a bully. If so, this book is for you.

Taking the Bully by the Horns teaches you how to recognize different types of bullies and the games they play. For instance, in "the guessing game," a bully pretends to be your friend one day--shares her snack with you, tells you how nice your hair is, and so forth. Then the next day she tells you your hair looks dirty, takes your lunch away from you, and generally treats you like a stinky sock. She keeps you guessing whether she's "the bully" or "the friend."

Not only can you learn how to recognize bullies, but also why they act the way they do and what you should do about it. Author Kathy Noll gives some specific examples of how to respond to a bully. For instance, she describes what to do when someone tries to take something away from you, how to defend yourself when older brothers and sisters pick on you, and what to do when someone tries to get you to do something illegal. At the end of the book, she answers questions such as "What do you do if somebody keeps taking your things?" and "How many times does somebody have to do something to you before they qualify as a bully?"

This book is for bullies as well as their victims. If you think you might be a bully, this book explains how to stop "the bully cycle." The book is 37 pages long, and contains some very good advice. It is written at approximately the 5th grade reading level, but younger children may benefit from it too, particularly with a parent's help. Bullying tends to start in elementary school and peak in middle school, so this book is well-suited to children who want to stop the bully cycle before it gets worse.

The cost of Taking the Bully by the Horns is $9.95 plus $2.00 for shipping and handling. You can order it directly from the author by sending a check payable to Kathy Noll to:
